Bay Tree Cafe is an independent, family‑run café tucked away on St John’s Street in Bury St Edmunds – sometimes called the town’s “cool quarter”. We’re a warm, welcoming spot away from the main hustle, perfect for brunch, lunch, or a coffee and slice of something freshly baked.
Our menu is full of comforting hashes, generous sandwiches, and an ever‑changing selection of bakes. We prepare dishes fresh to order, and our scones and treats are baked in‑house. We even make our own coffee syrups, from pumpkin spice to seasonal specials.
Whether you’re dropping in for a quick coffee, meeting friends for brunch, or discovering us for the first time, you’ll find friendly faces, good music, and a relaxed atmosphere. Take a seat inside or enjoy a table outside and watch the world go by.
A few words from people who have discovered Bay Tree Cafe and made it part of their Bury routine.
“Absolutely fabulous place! Highly recommend. The food was incredible, service was attentive without being overbearing, and everything arrived quickly and perfectly cooked. A must-visit if you're in the area — warm, welcoming, and full of charm.”
“Absolutely love coming here. Lisa and staff are always so welcoming and friendly and always make a perfect Poutine dish - if you haven't tried it, you are missing out! Thank you ever so much for making today extra special by providing candles for mine and my nephews birthday. See you all soon”
“A great little place in St John’s St, aka “the cool quarter “ in Bury St Edmunds. We stopped in for a quick coffee and a snack to be greeted by a lovely friendly welcome. The coffees were great, why wouldn’t they be as they use Butterworth & Sons, a local coffee supplier with a high reputation. We had a cranberry scone with clotted cream and jam, it was warm and fresh, also we had chocolate chip cookies, all delicious. Highly recommended.”
“Fabulous food, great service and an interesting menu. A great little independent café in a world of bland chains.”
“The roasted mushroom hash was literally one of the tastiest things I’ve ever eaten.”
Walk‑ins are always welcome. We recommend arriving a little early on busy weekends.
